Fibromyalgia is an illness that people, including most doctors, simply do not understand. Because this illness is hard to “prove,” sufferers may be secretly convicted of hypochondria or laziness by loved one’s. Most are probably told, ‘It’s all in your head’, often being urged to exercise, lose weight or take anti-depressants.
Physicians can be even worse. If they believe the condition exists at all—and some don’t—their first impulse is to mask the symptoms with prescription drugs. Patients often end up on a medical merry-go-round, seeing doctor after doctor after doctor. They end up more confused and disoriented than ever, often believing they are crazy, after all.
